How to Reach Wayanad from Bangalore, Mysore, Kochi & Kozhikode

Wayanad is one of Kerala’s most beautiful hill destinations, known for its mist-covered mountains, lush forests, spice plantations, waterfalls and wildlife. Located in the Western Ghats, Wayanad is well connected by road to major cities in Kerala and Karnataka. With a wide range of hotels in Wayanad, travellers can easily find a comfortable stay while exploring the region’s natural and cultural attractions.

Whether you are travelling from Bangalore, Mysore, Kochi or Kozhikode, there are several convenient ways to reach Wayanad. The journey itself is an enjoyable part of the trip, with winding ghat roads, forest stretches and beautiful views along the way.

Wayanad at a Glance

Wayanad has no railway station or commercial airport of its own, so most travellers arrive by road. The main towns, Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady, work as gateways to the region's attractions. The nearest major railway station is Kozhikode, and the nearest airport is Calicut International Airport (Karipur).

Distances and travel times below are approximate and can vary with traffic, weather and road conditions.

How to Reach Wayanad from Bangalore

Distance: Around 280 km to Kalpetta
Travel time: 6 to 7 hours

By road: The most popular route runs from Bangalore to Mysore, then Nanjangud, Gundlupet, Bandipur, Muthanga and Sulthan Bathery, before continuing to Kalpetta. The drive passes through the Bandipur and Wayanad forest belt, so keep an eye out for deer, elephants and other wildlife.

By bus: Both Karnataka and Kerala state transport services, along with private operators, run daily buses from Bangalore to Sulthan Bathery, Kalpetta and Mananthavady. Overnight sleeper services are popular.

By train and air: Bangalore has excellent rail and air links, but neither goes directly to Wayanad. Most travellers take a train to Mysore or Kozhikode and continue by road.

Good to know: Traffic on the Bandipur stretch of NH766 is restricted at night, roughly from 9 pm to 6 am. Plan your journey to cross this section during the day, and check the latest rules before you leave.

How to Reach Wayanad from Mysore

Distance: Around 120 km to Kalpetta (about 100 km to Sulthan Bathery)
Travel time: 3 to 3.5 hours

Mysore is the closest major city to Wayanad and an ideal starting point for a short getaway.

By road: Take the Mysore, Gundlupet, Bandipur, Muthanga, Sulthan Bathery route, then continue to Kalpetta. The road runs through beautiful forest stretches, so please avoid stopping, honking or feeding animals inside the reserve.

Alternative route: You can also travel via HD Kote, Kutta and Tholpetty to Mananthavady. This is a good option if you are heading to north Wayanad, and the forest views are lovely.

By bus: Regular buses connect Mysore with Sulthan Bathery, Kalpetta and Mananthavady throughout the day.

How to Reach Wayanad from Kochi

Distance: Around 250 km to Kalpetta
Travel time: 6 to 7 hours

By road: The usual route goes from Kochi to Thrissur, Kuttippuram, Kozhikode, then up the Thamarassery Churam (ghat road) to Lakkidi and on to Kalpetta. Take breaks along the way, as it is a long drive with a hilly final stretch.

By train: Kochi has several railway stations with good connections. Most travellers take a train to Kozhikode and then continue by bus or taxi, which is more comfortable than driving the whole way.

By air: Cochin International Airport is far from Wayanad, so travellers flying in usually prefer Calicut Airport and continue by road.

By bus: KSRTC and private buses run from Kochi to Kozhikode, with onward buses to Kalpetta. A few direct services are also available.

How to Reach Wayanad from Kozhikode

Distance: Around 70 to 75 km to Kalpetta
Travel time: 2 to 2.5 hours

Kozhikode is the closest city with major rail and air connections, making it the most convenient entry point for many visitors.

By road: Head up the Thamarassery Churam, a scenic ghat road with nine hairpin bends. Do stop at the Lakkidi viewpoint, one of the most photographed spots on the route and often called the gateway to Wayanad. If the view is the reason you came, it is worth booking one of the rooms with a hill-view balcony for the rest of your stay.

By train: Kozhikode Railway Station is the nearest major station. Taxis and buses to Kalpetta are easily available outside the station.

By air: Calicut International Airport (Karipur) is roughly 95 to 100 km from Kalpetta. Prepaid taxis and cabs are available at the airport.

By bus: Frequent KSRTC and private buses run from Kozhikode to Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady.

Travel Tips for Reaching Wayanad

- Start early. Morning departures help you avoid traffic and cross the ghat sections in good light.

- Check the weather. Heavy monsoon rain can cause landslides or slow traffic on the Thamarassery Churam, so check road conditions before you travel.

- Respect the forest. Do not litter, honk or stop your vehicle in wildlife zones.

- Carry cash and fuel. Fill up in larger towns before entering forest stretches.

- Book your stays in advance. Weekends and holiday seasons fill up quickly, so it is worth booking rooms and suites in Wayanad before you set out..

- Drive carefully. Ghat roads have sharp bends, so take your time and use low gears on descents.

Final Thoughts

Reaching Wayanad is easy once you pick the right route. From Mysore and Kozhikode it is a quick and scenic drive, from Bangalore it is a comfortable day-trip route, and from Kochi it is a longer but rewarding journey through Kerala's countryside. If you are building the trip around a long weekend, our Wayanad stay and tour packages bundle the drive with guided sightseeing.

Whichever way you travel, start early, drive carefully and enjoy the views, because in Wayanad the journey is as beautiful as the destination.
